Maximum Ride: The Final Warning is the fourth book in this series about a “flock” of kids who were genetically modified so that their DNA mixed with avian DNA, and they now have wings and can fly (and some of them have other special abilities, too). Fourteen-year-old Max is the leader of the group, and she is also the narrator of the story. In this latest installment in the series, the flock is off to Antarctica to work with scientists to combat global warming, but, of course, as always, there’s an enemy on their trail.
This is a fast-paced, exciting story with an interesting premise. It’s well-written, and I love the character of Max. The Maximum Ride series is great for reluctant readers, and it’s quite entertaining, and at times quite thought-provoking as well. This book was a little heavy-handed with its environmentalist message (a message I do agree with, but a little more subtlety would have been nice). I certainly take issue with some of James Patterson’s recent comments about children’s and YA literature, but this is a review of the book, not the author, and the book itself is certainly worth reading, especially for fans of the series. I think the way this series came about is a little strange (James Patterson apparently got the idea from one of his other books–I guess that’s what happens when you have ghostwriters, which I suspect he does though I have no proof of that, because the similarities are really strange, and couldn’t he at least have changed the main character’s name if they’re not the same people?) , but it’s a quick adventure that I most definitely enjoyed every page of, and I do recommend it.

I have this book checked out from the library right now and I’m really excited to read it! Nice review!

I agree that the importance of working on environmental issues and global warming could have been a little less in-your-face.
Over all I don’t know what I thought of this book, exactly. It seemed kind of like a lame wrap-up for the series, but I think the books just grew old, anyway (how many times can you really read about amazing escapes and plans?). And what was with all the new skills the Flock got that they never used at all? I kind of hope that doesn’t mean Mr. Patterson is planning a 5th book.
April 11, 2008 at 11:33 am
I may not have read the book yet but judging from the first 3 it cant be that bad and as for all the skills whats the big deal personally i like it and i never get tired of all the escapes

Nudge and Iggy get new powers from un-programmed mutation.
April 18, 2008 at 5:32 pm
it was a really flimsy and unconvincing conclusion to an otherwise freaking awesome series. i really liked the other books. but i was pretty disappointed with the fourth. it seemed like there was only half a plot, and it was definitely too short.
and where did this director dude spring from? did someone make him and his robo-minions? i mean, sheesh, at least make it plausible and give an explanation. this isn’t teen titans.
and why were they being auctioned? in hawaii (by the way, what is up with the freak-hurricane?!) of all places. is there much demand for teenage-mutant-slave-birds? i really hope that patterson can make up for this stuff with a fifth book.
the max/fang love scene was EXACTLY the same as the last one. let’s move the plot forward a bit, shall we people? max has to grow up and stop running at SOME point, right? *shakes head* you can’t conclude a series this way. it’s just not right to the fans. it leaves them hanging in the worst possible way. in a dumbfounded “what -the-flip-just-happened-this-was-sposed-to-be-more” kinda way.
haha okay rant over. :)
p.s. aaron, you can’t judge this book by the first three. that would be unfair to them. and all literature.
November 7, 2010 at 3:24 am
The Uber-Director tried to auction them off in Florida, not Hawaii. read it again.
February 24, 2020 at 7:00 am
can ask i ask you what is the conclusion??
April 18, 2008 at 5:43 pm
it was like awesomeness to a nosedive into the land of silly. yeesh.
May 20, 2008 at 1:03 am
I personally disliked this book. I have heard enough about global warming without the ‘ message’ being shoved down my throat for 200 or so pages. I still am searching for an explanation for why the dog talks and gets his new abity ( I won’t tell you, that’ d be cheating). The über director has no explantionand the plot is overall crummy. And, by the way, this is not the final book.who knows if I’ll even bother to read the next one

this book was just… uh wow. um, it basically sucked. i read it and was like “dude. this was written by PATTERSON?!” wtf.
this book made me sad. no plot, nothing new, not even a freakin EXPLANATION as to how the frick a couple of robots woke up one day and decided to rule the world and sell some birdkids. how does that even correlate?! RRRGH. >.<
July 7, 2008 at 11:00 am
yes, this book looks OK, I’m notr sure if I like the whole concept of it but over all I am eager to see what james Patterson is alll about….
July 13, 2008 at 10:12 pm
I read the first three books in the series and i totally LOVED them!! I thought the forth was a dissapointment. I HATED every thing about the global warming crap. I hope the fith with get back on track with max and the gang trying to take down the school. I also wanted to find out more about fang and max. Do they finally get together? Come on Patterson, please make an awsome fifth!
July 28, 2008 at 5:31 pm
I dunno this book made me dissapointed. I mean ya global warming is important, but come on, I’ve heard enough already! And the Uber Director was all random. Where did he come from? I dunno i hope the fifth book will rock. I heard It’s gonna be called water wings. But I’m looking forward to the manga.
July 29, 2008 at 3:12 pm
I was truly disappointed with this book. First of all, it was half the usual length. Second, the adventure just wasn’t as thrilling as before. Third, the new powers that showed up looked as if Patterson just gave it to them just for the sake of getting new powers. Plus, some of the powers were really lame. Like Iggy’s new power for example. He deserved a better power than that (not gonna spoil). And finally, the story basically revolved around global warming.
Yes, global warming is an important issue. Yes, global warming needs to be properly addressed. However, addressing global warming in this series isn’t the proper way. Global warming SLAUGHTERED this book. Every time it came up, I skipped over it. And I did a LOT of skipping through this book because of this. Let’s face it. This series is about adventure, thrills, and non-stop action. The thrill died in this book. If I want to learn about global warming, i’ll read an online article about it. The only thing that this book accomplished was making me hate global warming for ruining such an awesome series.
If you want to talk about global warming, that’s fine with me. I’ll even support you. But stick it in a series where it doesn’t belong, and I’ll have to protest about it all over the place.
I’ve finally convinced myself to think of this book as a ‘filler.’ I’m hoping that if Patterson makes a 5th book (which I hope he does), that it’ll be a significantly better one than ‘The Final Warning.’
July 29, 2008 at 10:58 pm
I have to agree with “madd”. Patterson’s ‘The Final Warning’, failed to come near to my expectations. The thrill, as “madd” said, was taken right out of the sky. Literally.
Patterson set up his amazing series to reach soaring hights (sorry for all my terrible puns), but unfortunatly I think he clipped the wings on this one.
The powers were lackluster, the new villain was terrible, and to top it off the entire emphaysis of adventure and excitement was killed by global warming.
I understand the point of placing morals in novels, however, global warming as a moral was pitiful. I give this book a thumbs down, and I’m waiting for the next one to wow me. I hope.
August 7, 2008 at 12:46 pm
I was totally bummed….would not recommend Final Warning to anyone. It was SUCH a disappointment. When the global warning stuff started, I hoped it would just be a small sidetrip in this story…but no such luck. I can’t tell you how unhappy I was when I realized that it was going to end with Max making a chapter-long speech to congress to shove global warning propaganda down our throats. Pitiful, Mr. Patterson, pitiful.
August 15, 2008 at 1:23 pm
OMG,maximum ride is awesome i cant wait for the 5th book called water wings comes out in 2010 and the movie comes out in 2010,so im waiting and hoping that they will finish the 4th book in the 5th book.OMG OMG OMG!love the series
August 15, 2008 at 1:24 pm
the fourth book was dissapointing
August 15, 2008 at 1:26 pm
love the series although the fourth book was disappointing i hope the 5th will finish the 4th 2 MaxRider lover
August 30, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Like the rest of you I loved the first 3 books. Good wit, fun action, sometimes silly but overall good plot. This 4th book was garbage.
First off the villians (Global warming lol and Dr. Noonecares) are just pathetic. I am pretty sure the earth had Hurricanes long before the global warming cult came along. AS far as the Doctor goes I feel he was just added on at the very end so our heroes have something to punch.
Over all I would say the book was just a filler. If you think about it nothing happened. The flock get a few new abilities and that is it. There was no character development at all. Example being the relationship between max and fang has not changed in the slightest.
August 31, 2008 at 5:25 pm
This books were flippin awesome. I never got tired of the escapes. The whole enviromental influence was just a bonus to me. I hope she writes another one, I really do.
September 3, 2008 at 3:51 pm
I really did like The Final Warning. I finished it in one day, actually. My biggest casualty was that I felt that Max and Fangs’ romance was left off and not really mentioned. I really want to know what happens between them, asides from everything that already has. It was a major point of the book and it wasn’t properly addressed, in my opinion. It made me want to scream. Ha-ha.
September 3, 2008 at 3:58 pm
And I’ll add in that, I am a teenager. I do like to read about romance. So the lack of sparks between Fang and Max at the end was like letting the air out of a balloon and watching it blow only a little ways and then it just stops–disappointment.
I’m going to add that I don’t believe in global warming, at all. So that really turned off the book for me. I’m sure our pollution is doing nothing good for our atmosphere, but why should a teen novel be based upon it?
If this is how the next Maximum Ride book will be, I do not plan on even reading the back cover.
Otherwise, this was another interesting novel by James Patterson.
The first three are the best, though.
September 19, 2008 at 1:53 pm
i have read it all and i think that the books are the coolest. i hope that there are more series in this novel. thies books has inspried me and i wont to make a movie out of them and i know that it would be a best seller.
October 18, 2008 at 11:22 pm
i think you have to be mature enough to understand the story and yes it did have alot empty spots like wat wil hapen btween max and fang? n da end dat she had to leave right away but i think it was a prety good book but da first 3 wer definetly better
October 19, 2008 at 1:56 am
i think the 4th book was quite disappointing. but i think it is fine. well… MaxRider Lover… i thought the fifth book comes out on 2009?
well pardon me if im wrong
October 19, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Ok, I’m currently on page 104, and I’m a little disappointed in the forth book. I’m glad James Patterson made it but its not as good as the first three (FYI my favorite book was the second one). I’m most disappointed in the new abilities the flock has gotten so far. So far, Iggy, Angel, Fang, and Nudge has gotten a new ability. Iggy’s ability is OK, like it makes sense, and Nudge’s doesn’t really make sense so far… but I’ll go with the flow, but come on! Fang’s and Angle’s are the stupidest abilities ever. I hope James had a good reason to give them to them, especially Angel’s. In the other books, the flocks abilities were kewl, like Angel could breath underwater, or Nudge could touch a computer screen and somehow find out how used it last, and the password… that was kewl, but im disappointed so far. But don’t take my word for it, read it, it’s still mostly good. Hope the 5th book will rock! =) -Nick out
October 22, 2008 at 5:04 pm
I THINK THAT ALL THE BOOKS WERE AWESOME IM HOPING FOR A 5TH BOOK
October 25, 2008 at 6:46 pm
i thought the first three were awesome, and that the fourth one was good–for like the first ten chapters(which are like two pages each). after that, the storyline just jumped off a cliff. it s-u-c-k-e-d.sucked. please, patterson. give us a good fifth book.
do something with max and fang.
and please ditch the global warming crap.
October 25, 2008 at 6:47 pm
oh, yeah. and what about the school and all that crapola?
November 9, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Now, I absolutely loved the Maximum Ride series. They were my favorite books. Max was awesomely cool!
…But then The Final Warning came out.
This book was a real disapointment. I mean, the size of it (It’s thinner than the others) seemed a little off. But then when I read it, I was deeply shocked and so dispointed. I expected better from James Patterson, and from the series!
Max doesn’t even seem like Max, she’s just like… And, the plot wasn’t nearly as great as the others in the series. And don’t even get me STARTED on all that preachy-glombal warming crap!
I think I’m going to pretend there was no Final Warning, just as some are doing with Breaking Dawn, the Twilight epilouge.
November 25, 2008 at 2:39 am
i cant wait 4 the 5th book im counting down till march!!
i thought the 4th book was ok but DEFINETLY could be better.
November 27, 2008 at 9:15 am
i think that all of the books were cool. i cant wait for the 5th book to come out.
they were all awesome.
keep on making book please james patternson.there the best!!!!!!
November 27, 2008 at 9:27 am
i think the thing about global warming was a great point to add to the books.
i mean a mutant teen bird-kid talking to the u.s. goverment? AWESOME!!!!
December 14, 2008 at 2:56 pm
I agree with most of you. The fourth book was not as good as the other three and hope that the fifth will be longer and better. I would also like it to finish the fourth book and I hope that something will happen with Fang and Max, I mean both scenes with them were like, almost exactly the same. I just hope that the fifth book is better than the last one.
December 19, 2008 at 9:02 pm
i haven’t been able to get the book yet, as it’s close to Christmas and my parents won’t let me :( but the only thing(s) i didn’t like about the books so far and am not looking forward to are max’s ‘sexist pig’ comments and the global warming cr**. i don’t agree with it, but i should be able to make that desision for myself thank, JP
December 21, 2008 at 4:36 pm
the book sucked. i read first three and waz amazed. i feel like the flock in this book got soft
December 26, 2008 at 9:44 pm
All da books woz well awesum n so woz da 4th but it was too short. Da global warming woz a gd fing 2 add bcos it made me more aware of it I meen I new bout it but……well I’m glad he put it in. N da new powers were well cwl, I’d love to be invisible if I stood still or be able to fart like gazzy. Awesome book but way too short and wot bout max n fangs romance????? I wanted sumink 2 hapen bout dat towards da end. Gr8 book but not as be as da 1st 3 (btw 3rd book ma fav)
January 18, 2009 at 6:37 am
The whole global warming thing really
ruined the whole point of the series.
He builds up to the whole saving the world thing and when i found out that it was global warming………….. :( really disappointed!
Being a teenager you don’t want to read
a book based on Global warming, you get
enough of that shoved down your throats.
Will anything ever happen with fang and Max?
I hope james Patterson can change the 5th
book around! :)
February 18, 2009 at 6:47 pm
hey guys i think that this book is the bomb!!!
max’s speech waz sooo great and i think that it waz sooo amazing here is sum of what max has to say: we the people of the united states in order to create a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to our selves and our posterity,do ordain and establish this constitution for the united states of America… So basically we need to stop being bung-holes to the us and start being more careful… but im just a kid and im only 11 and if i can come up with that well then that means that you people are so pathetic im not happy with you… :(
February 23, 2009 at 1:26 pm
I did not mind this book, but it realy needed more to it, books 1-3 ownzed but this is sad…. Theres going to be a movie? what for, itl reak, books like this dont make good movies, there to good to convert
March 17, 2009 at 12:50 pm
these books are so awsome. i think they are even better than twilight i just loooooove these books!!!!!
March 23, 2009 at 5:24 pm
I did not read the first 3 books and started on the final warning..yeah i know…just follow me
I found the book to be unfinished and left out important key plot lines…maybe the global warming issue would have worked if there would have been a lot more action scenes..and i really want to know what happened between FANG AND MAX…dang it!
well, I should probably read the first three…hopefully they won’t dissapoint me
March 27, 2009 at 1:03 pm

I definatly agree with Bex The Ninja,
The book was way too short, almost as if only one thing happened of inportance.
The whole global warming kick was great and all, but I think it ruined about half of the book. And the “save the world” thing was not what anyone expected. What happened to the whole “half plan”? It’s almost as if it just went away.
The whole Fang-Max thing definatly needs to get somewhere. The love scene is just repeating itself OVER and OVER.
Overall, it was a dissapointment. There was one-ish action scene and overall with the voice and the new powers and saving the world, didn’t get any further than the end of the last book.
P.S.-
Patterson will definatly make a sequal to this book. I hope it will be longer, reveal SOMETHING and follow up on events with plots that make SENSE!!!!!!
May 6, 2009 at 11:14 pm
I’ve read all five books, and although all are amazing, I’d have to say this one is the worst…of the five, that is. I didn’t like the whole, “saving the world from global warming” plot. I’m more of the person who reads a book to escape reality, not face it like I do any other time.
As for the “Fax”, well, let’s just say they need to GET A MOVE ON! (But don’t worry, the fifth book covers it ;D)
August 5, 2009 at 4:18 pm
i wanna do it with max!
August 5, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Yours Truly,
James Patterson
P.S. Don’t forget to check out my Daniel X series!

January 10, 2010 at 11:45 pm
I don’t really like the reviews of the book but I think it will be a good book.
March 7, 2010 at 5:16 pm
hey is there romance in this book
May 9, 2010 at 3:40 pm
Hey i just finished the third book and cant wait to start the next 2 but Im a little nervous that I might get bored with them!
June 20, 2010 at 11:19 pm
Tasha-
I have read all of the books up to “Max” and I am now re-reading them. That’s how good they are. Don’t worry-you will not get bored with them. I can’t wait to read “Fang”. That should be good!
June 20, 2010 at 11:28 pm
Question: Do you think that Fang is the perfect guy for Max? Or is Dylan the perfect one? I am a Fang lover, so I think it is Fang. What do you all think?
June 22, 2010 at 3:38 pm
who are the models for the books? does anyone know?
also- there is supposed to be a maximum ride movie coming out this year. idk but they can’t screw it up. if they make it wrong, then it will be a lame movie. And there is a rumor that kristen stewart might play max? uh no. sorry. it would just be not right…cuz everyone thinks of her as twilight girl you know?
June 30, 2010 at 2:32 pm
Book 1 Action and save the world, book 2 and 3 ditto. Suspense…how will they save the world… then book 4 and it is global warming? I feel misled and abused. What a lousy way to wrap up a series. Go ahead and write 5th one, I won’t bother to read it.
August 22, 2010 at 3:51 pm
I love all the maximum ride books so far. All six of them have been the best books I’ve ever read. Sure there are a LOT of escape scenes and evil scientists and Global Warming but I don’t mind. The escapes are always fun, interesting and leave me happy they got out once again. Besides if I ever get kidnapped I now know the perfect snide comments and attacks to use :) . The evil scientists make me fill with hatred which is a good thing. And i do truly believe that Global Warming is a problem and I’m glad he told everyone about it using the characters. I mean think of how many people buy these books! I love the characters, the action, the romance, and the whole series. I’ll be heartbroken when it ends :( .
October 22, 2010 at 10:10 pm
what was the ending to this book my mom burnt it she doesnt like me reading them im at a 10th grade reading level and only in 8th grade
April 16, 2011 at 10:35 pm
I hated this book. On a friend’s recommendation I struggled through the first 3 Maximum Ride novels, but this was too much. I can no longer ignore Patterson’s ignorant, child-like writing style. I love to read, and have seldom read a book I wouldn’t give a second chance, but this book made me want to scream and throw it against a wall in frustration. Max’s sarcasm, funny at first, becamse incredibly tiresome, until I was ready to slap her. She has to take something in life seriously; kids LIVES are on the line and she’s smart-mouthing off to their captors.
The lack of violence from the adults was also unrealistic. If the kids are their prisoners, the adults shouldn’t be fazed by Max’s petty insults.
There was absolutely no chemistry between Max and Fang, and I can’t understand why everyone things they’re “soul mates”. They’re freaking 14. Since when do teenage relationships ever last?
The environmentalist tone was so blatantly left-winger and obnoxious I couldn’t take it. I’m not against doing things that are better for the planet, but this book went so far over the line I couldn’t stomach it. I skipped over large parts because I was afraid I’d go on a shooting rampage due to the utter stupidity of the book. The ‘Go Green; let’s all sit in a circle and sing kumbaya’ made me want to scream. It was ALL they talked about! After all this drama of ‘Max has to save the world!’ we find out she’s going to save the world by preventing global warming?! This book was the biggest lunch-bag letdown I’ve ever suffered from a book. Patterson doesn’t even deserve to be called a writer for this drivel he passes off as a novel.

Nice book

I’m not sure where you’re getting your info, but great topic. I needs to spend some time learning more or understanding more. Thanks for magnificent information I was looking for this info for my mission
