Justine Larbalestier‘s latest novel, How to Ditch Your Fairy, takes place in a world where almost everyone has their own personal fairy. These invisible creatures help/hinder humans in various ways: there are loose change finding fairies, good hair fairies, clothes shopping fairies, all boys like you fairies, and parking fairies. Charlie, a student at New Avalon Sports High, is the not-so-happy owner of a parking fairy. Not only is it useless for someone who can’t even drive, it’s a major annoyance because of all the people wanting her to ride in their cars and get them a good parking spot.
How to Ditch Your Fairy is the story of Charlie’s quest to ditch her fairy, get the guy, keep her demerit total as low as possible, find great clothes with help from her best friend’s clothes shopping fairy, and keep her sanity throughout all of these crazy adventures! It’s a pretty fantastic, really funny book, overall pretty great, although I did have a few unanswered questions at the end. I’m hoping that means there’s a sequel in the works! I sat down and started reading this book as soon as it arrived in the mail, and I didn’t put it down until I was finished; I didn’t even notice the time passing, that’s how caught up I was in the story. It’s fun and interesting and has a main character I absolutely couldn’t get enough of! Charlie is seriously awesome, as is this book, and you should all read it as soon as possible (which is October for most of you).

I was wondering if this would be good, and it sounds like it is! Yay! I had it on my to-read list already (the title was enough to catch my attention, plus I read the Magic or Madness trilogy), but your review is making me really look forward to it!

[…] The review is by Jocelyn of TeenBookReview and in what I’ve decided is a very good omen she is very enthusiastic: I sat down and started reading this book as soon as it arrived in the mail, and I didn’t put it down until I was finished; I didn’t even notice the time passing, that’s how caught up I was in the story. It’s fun and interesting and has a main character I absolutely couldn’t get enough of! Charlie is seriously awesome, as is this book, and you should all read it as soon as possible. […]

I’m going to have to get this one. It sounds fun enough. Plus my summer job is on the verge of being the most boring job on earth, and it probably would be if I didn’t get to bring a book. :)

Sound like a great premise! I enjoy Larbalestier’s novels.

Everybody at our school refuses to read this book. They all read the first page and decided never to read it. They say demerit/infraction 173 times. yes we have too much free time. The book made no sense. Interesting? its not. don’t read it.Also the first page makes NO SENSE. What she describes is impossible to happen. There is something wrong with her. ????? And the guy’s name is Steffi. My sisters name is Steffie. This book disturbed her. There are also no decent fairies and there should be. (except for the shopping fairy.)Also it was kinda stupid to go down the luge track. Also they didnt know what it was-but isnt it kind of obvious? Justine Larbalestier had the right idea for a story, but not enough good parts or good concepts. the common knowledge of it didnt make sense either. also the the teachers ticked us off. is it legal to punish kids for no reason that many times a day?. But the author, this author is married to is amazing. His name is Scott Westerfeld. READ HIS BOOKS. Especially the series that start with the first book: the Uglies. Anyways sorry if you like this book, but this was our opinion on it.

The book is amazing! I read the book and I guess you just hate the book. But I bet that most people will love this book and won’t be able to put it down. I don’t like reading or books, but I had a book report to do so I chose this book, I read and found that this book had me hooked and I read all 300 pages in 3 days! I recommend it, unlike you.

I agree. What’s with the word “doos” and all her other words? Some of the fairies weren’t very creative. A grip fairy? Really? There were too many infractions and demerits for my taste. So if you do like this book, sorry but it’s my opinion.

[…] A very entertaining and funny novel about a word full of fairies, who are there to hinder humans doing the most mundane of tasks, and one girl’s attempt to do as the title suggests, and ditch her own personal fairy. Check out an excerpt. The paperback version’s cover, seen below, is also pretty funny, and fitting to the story. […]
